Isthmus Peak Track - A Stunning & Rewarding Hike

The Isthmus Peak Track in Otago is a remarkable full day hiking adventure that rewards those who take it on with some of the most awe-inspiring views in New Zealand. Beginning just a short drive from Wanaka, the track steadily winds its way up through farmland before transitioning into tussock covered high country. The climb is gradual yet sustained, giving walkers time to settle into a rhythm while enjoying the ever-expanding scenery that unfolds with each step. As the path climbs higher, Lake Hāwea comes into view on one side, and soon after, Lake Wānaka reveals itself on the other, creating the unique experience of hiking a mountain ridge flanked by two dazzling alpine lakes.

The landscape is vast, wild, and quintessentially Central Otago rolling golden slopes, snow-dusted peaks in the distance, and the clarity of the Southern Alps stretching far to the horizon. The track continues to climb until reaching the summit at 1,385 metres, where the reward is a sweeping panorama that rivals the famous Roys Peak but with fewer crowds and a stronger sense of solitude. From this vantage point, hikers can take in the grandeur of Mount Aspiring National Park, the braided valleys below, and the glistening lakes that make the region so iconic.

Guided trips on Isthmus Peak Track allow walkers to move at a comfortable pace while learning about the area’s natural history, geology, and cultural stories that bring the land to life. It is a challenging but achievable hike for those with a reasonable level of fitness, making it a perfect option for adventurous visitors wanting an authentic backcountry experience. This journey is not just about reaching the top but about embracing the sense of space, connection, and wonder that defines New Zealand’s Southern Alps.

The Isthmus Peak Track near Wanaka is a rewarding full-day hike offering some of Otago’s most spectacular views. Starting with a steady climb through farmland and tussock slopes, the trail gradually reveals the sparkling blue waters of Lake Hāwea on one side and Lake Wānaka on the other. At 1,385 metres, the summit provides sweeping panoramas across the Southern Alps, Mount Aspiring National Park, and the valleys below. What If the weather is bad for my trip ?
The Southern Alps in New Zealand is a worldwide desired climbing and skiing destination due to its remoteness and wilderness beauty. Windows of nice settled weather between fronts are oftern in place. But as for all mountain ranges in the world, the Southern Alps also has challenging weather. After all, it’s a long, high mountain range located on a tiny island surounded by the Tasman Sea and the Southern Pacific Ocean…

Summit Explorers Mountain Guides are well experienced in judging the weather and conditions to provide you the best possible trip. They will go above and beyond to make the trip happen. But sometimes, it’s out of our control, so  if the weather remains terrible and prevents the trip from happenning as originally planned, you will be offered a different location and/or climb. There will be no refund for bad weather and conditions. However, depending of the agreement and avaibility of the guide, an arrangment could be discussed to postpone the trip at a different date.

Should I get a trip insurance
We strongly advice that all clients purchase travel and cancellation insurance that specifically covers cancellation due to injury or illness as well as weather cancellation. This is highly recommended for all trips with Summit Explorers due to the nature of the trips we provide. We have a relationship with the provider Global Rescue which has  an option which includes a “Cancel for any Reason” policy. Rescue and Extraction is covered by ACC in New Zealand, however ACC does not cover for any trip cancellation. Insurance policy costs will vary based on age, duration of trip and coverage selected. .
